Annie Sprinkle was a prostitute and porn star before being a performance artist causing stir with unprecedented performances: in several shows she made the audience examine her cervix with a small mirror she had inserted into her vagina.[1] The stage was equipped with objects reminding of her time as sex-worker. She did a similar performance again, entitled "Public Cervix Announcement", in the "Museum Kunstpalast" in Düsseldorf in 2008.[2] Here, too, she invited the audience to examine her cervix. Sprinkle displays sexuality in a very positive way, presenting it as absolutely natural and equally due to women and men. The woman is not objectified, but she is considered as a subject, whose gaze can be returned, represented in real by the artist herself. As a woman she is in the position to publicly announce the visibility of the invisible sex."[3]
